+In the past, the Korean scientific community avoided working with creationists due to the fear of giving the movement more credence. Silence is no longer an option.

+The STR has been fighting to remove content from textbooks that describe evolution, such as the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestral bird's ancestor. However, this is just one aspect of the evolution of the developmental paradigm.
+
+What is Evolution?
+
+Evolution is a scientific theory that explains the changes in the genetic traits of living organisms over time. The theory is based upon the fact that living organisms adjust to their environment, which could result in changes to genes or whole genomes. Over the course of many generations these changes could result in the emergence of new species. Natural selection is the dominant theory of evolution. It explains how individuals with traits that are advantageous survive and reproduce more than those with less advantageous traits. This differing reproduction may be a catalyst to the development and emergence of new species.

+The term "evolution", which comes from the Latin for unrolling or revealing has been used in many different ways as the concept has changed in both science and elsewhere. Early evolutionists, such as Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that existing species changed into other species in a certain way. The term"transmutation" was coined by the Lamarck's disciple, embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint Hilaire, to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 opposed this notion and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the view that existing species evolve into new species in an orderly and predictable manner.

+In recent years, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living organisms develop traits that increase their chances of survival, or their ability to reproduce offspring. As time passes, genetic variation can cause a population develop new physical traits or biological functions. This shift in gene frequency is called natural selection, and it is the main driver of evolutionary changes. However, non-genetic changes such as increases in muscle mass from diet or exercise can't be considered examples of evolution because they are not inherited by the next generation.

+Despite the fact that evolution has stood the test of time and a multitude of scientific experiments however, creationists have taken advantage of the idea that evolution is controversial to argue that it shouldn't be taught in school. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories over evolution in textbooks for high schools. +In reality many religious individuals have found ways to reconcile their beliefs with evolution. For example, some Christians believe that God created the world through evolution, and that humans share an ancestry with other animals.

+It is crucial that science educators advocate for teaching evolution. Unfortunately, in some countries around the world there is a growing anti-evolutionist sentiment. In the United States, efforts to limit the teaching of evolution have made headway in a few states. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) which is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research, is campaigning for the removal of textbooks on the evolution of horses as well as the avian ancestral Archaeopteryx.

+It is important to remember, however, that the evidence in favor of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution comes from a variety of sources, such as fossils, genetics and the behavior of living creatures. Other scientists independently verify the evidence.

+The majority of scientists agree with the theory of evolution. The reasons behind this support vary. Certain scientists study evolution to make practical discoveries such as developing new medicines and other treatments, while others use it to improve the lives of animals and plant species, mostly to benefit of humans. Some scientists are simply curious, while others hold a an intense belief in God.

+What is Creationism?

+Creationists believe that God created all things in the universe. They also believe the Bible is God's word and should be believed to be true. Many creationists are Christians however, not all. Creationists generally fall in one of two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).

+YECs are the most well known type of creationist and they believe that God created the universe in the exact way described in the Bible. YECs believe that the biblical account of the creation's six days is literal and that the universe and life on Earth was created only recently.

+OECs are not as well-known however they're just as enthusiastic about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe the universe and Earth are billions-of-years old and that evolution is a lie.
+
+Both forms of creationism deny the scientific theories that biogenesis and natural selection can explain how life began on Earth. They assert that evolution is inconceivable because it would require miracles. The pioneers of modern scientific thought shunned miracles because they feared they could lose their credibility.

+Some creationists are able to accept both naturalistic evolution and special creation, and call their view "theistic evolution." This is also known as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of the created species." This theory states that God creates the original species and then allows these to evolve over time. These evolution changes will eventually result in new species similar to the original.

+Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the entire universe in one event known as the Great Flood. Creationists believe that all species were created at the same moment and then slowly evolved. They reject the concept of abiogenesis, and argue that self-replicating living cannot come from nonliving matter.

+In general, the creationists are against teaching of evolution in schools. Numerous professional associations, such as the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education are in support of this view and so do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. However, certain academic institutions and scientists are more flexible and permit the inclusion of both evolution and creationism in their curricula.

+What is Creationism in Korea?
+
+When people think about the concept of creationism, a lot think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. Publishers of high school textbooks have recently announced that they will eliminate references to evolution from their books. A group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an unofficial body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research which is the driving force behind the campaign. The STR has achieved its first victory by removing from textbooks the evidence of the evolution and ancestor of an avian, called the Archeopteryx. The focus is now on removing excerpts from Darwin's notorious finch research and on human evolution as well.

+STR claims to have the support of 4,000 families and individual members. Its goal, it says is to cleanse the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which portrays an image of students as being negative. It also aims at countering the influence of American Creationists in the United States. A survey of undergraduates studying biology found that half did not believe in evolution. The reasons aren't evident, but they could be due to religious beliefs or the lack of creation scientists in the US.

+The KACR has accomplished a lot in the past through seminars and lectures. It also publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and an ebook. The most notable of these is a text on the natural sciences, with an orthodox creationist perspective, which attracted the attention of college communities. In 1991, a professor together with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught to students today.

+On August 6th and 7th of 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. This was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish, and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of a few thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given talks on creation science in prestigious seminaries. KACR plans to create a Creation Science Education Center in the near future.
